A speed iron racer man!

The last two nights have been action packed. In an unprecedented move Micah (me) went to the theater two nights in a row! I know this is insane. Oh, I forgot to mention. I don't like theaters. Too many people in one place for my comfort. But every now and then there are a few movies that make me venture out and brave the crowds.

Iron Man and Speed Racer did just that. "Wow" is the shortest way I can put it! I loved every moment of both films.

Thursday night on a whim I decided to go see Iron Man after work. Co-worker Jeff and I had talked about it and plans were set. Then Co-worker Greg made his way into the fray as well. Due to unfortunate gooberness on Jeff's part that included his keys, his phone and his car. Then locking of said items in said car. He couldn't make it. So it was just Greg and I.

I won't be able to lavish any worth while praise on Mr. Downey that hasn't already (and probably better) been said. But, he rocked it out as Tony Stark. It has been said this is one of the best "comic-book" movies that has been made. This is true. But let’s take out the "comic-book" qualifier and it is still top notch. Everyone turned out a great performance. I swear there were times you couldn’t tell Iron Man was CGI. It looked very real. The one odd thing in the whole movie was Axe-Master Tom Morello's cameo. I guess the song "Cochise" was used for previews and he can pull of a Middle Eastern terrorist look pretty well. I will be looking forward to the sequel. War Machine and Mandarin will be making appearances I hope. Oh yeah, the tease at the end, after the credits. Meh, didn’t like that. I give it an 8/10

The viewing of Speed Racer was a bit less spontaneous. I had planned for weeks to go see it. So I purchased tickets for me and my brother in advance. The one spontaneous thing was co-worker Greg came with.

If you are a fan of Speed Racer, and by fan I mean that you in any way enjoyed the original cartoon. You will probably like this. I had read earlier Friday that it should be called "Epilepsy the Movie." That was a pretty accurate description. If you are prone to seizures you might want to hold off on this one. That in no way was a negative for me however. I loved it. There was one point that I thought they blew it but they made up for it in the end and kept true to the story. The special effects were amazing. Realism was left at the door. Stylization and just plain fun was invited in. I’ve heard people complain about this. I don’t know what people were expecting. This is a movie based off an unrealistic and absurd cartoon. The only par experience was the actor who played Speed. It could have been any number of early twenty male actors playing Speed and nothing would have changed. I give it a 7/10

I already want to see both of these movies again.

This summer looks like its going to be a busy one at the theater. What with the new Indy, Batman and Star Wars all being big screen must sees. Sometimes waiting for DVD is not an option.

Did you just type that?

This is going to seem a bit out of character for my blog and I apologize beforehand if I offend anyone or if I am way off base here.

So, last night my Dad and I were having a discussion about scripture that always brings up question marks or makes us think. The one he brought up was how was Jesus born with no sin? We believe he was that’s not the question. But, what made it so?

This led to the question, is the sinful nature passed through the father? Is the semen a transmitter of that nature? We know in Ex. 34:6-7 God makes it clear that sins and the consequences follow generations through the father. Jesus was not conceived with semen which means no sins of the father were to be carried onto him. What about Mary? She was born from normal means. She has that same nature that you and I have, sin. How is the sinful nature not carried on from Mother to Child? I could be wrong but I don’t recall and cannot find that transfer anywhere. Why? This is where things could get a little touchy.

Menstrual Cycles. That is the answer we came too. All through scripture blood is used to cleanse sin. The sacrifices in the Temple and then the ultimate blood sacrifice, Jesus. After some thought, this could be a key into Jesus being born sinless. The bleeding a woman does in those cycles keeps the uterus clean. This also opened up a possibility, that a woman being considered ceremonially unclean due to these cycles is a much deeper thing. It’s not just bleeding. It’s bleeding out sin.

This also led to the woman being made from man. I’m not going to go into a whole bunch here. Just another thought about our separate natures as man and woman. When we look at God throughout the Bible we see him having characteristics of both man and woman. Man was made first in his image. Woman was made from man separating those characteristics we see in God and in a way making it so we cannot fully understand God. Heck, we can’t even understand each other most of the time.

Again, I could be wrong on all of this. Just some thoughts.

Mitch

So, this kid who works with me has a music career he is trying to get started. He's been recording for the last several weeks and now has a completed song. I got an exclusive scoop on this up and coming star.

I present for your listening pleasure Mitch Hull and his first single(not really a single) "Change of Heart".

In all seriousness, Mitch is very talented. I am looking forward to more as it comes out. This kid is going places I tells ya!

His Ascension

I don't keep up with things I want to write about. So this is a little late.

Last Sunday, Wade gave one of the best sermons I have ever heard. Here is a link, go listen.

Now, when I say best sermon I mean it. I'm not just saying this because I think Wade is the bee's knee's. The whole time I felt a weight pressing down on me as if the spirit was showing me the heaviness and importance of this message. I even moved my arms a few times to make sure the weight really wasn't there.

Whats the point?

I finished reading Surprised by Hope a few weeks ago. It took me longer than it should have because I have a reading problem. I tend to fall asleep while reading even if I like the book. But, I finished and boy am I glad I did!

Wednesday night class is using the book as a guide for a new class direction we are going. Within two classes we already have people that are a bit perplexed. I love it! There is something to be said about watching people who have believed something and been taught something their whole lives and in a matter of an hour they are hearing something different come from the VERY scripture that they thought said something else.

What is this different thing people are hearing? Our Christian goal and hope is not to go to Heaven when we die. Heaven is coming to us. The Resurrection, The New Creation! There is a holding place when we die. Some sort of Sheol, Hades or Paradise as it has been called. We go there when we die, all of us. Good or bad. Those that are in Christ now are going to be in Christ in death as well. Then Resurrection!

So what does this mean? How does this change anything for a Christian? Good question and there is an even better answer. Wright gives a great answer actually.

When Marx said “religion is the opiate of the masses” this would have been true for Christianity only if our only hope was to flee this suffering world and leave it behind for a Heaven, a distant place of peace away from all the horror of our world. Fortunately for us that is not true and that is not our hope.

How is that an answer? Well, if all we hope for as Christians is that we will one day get away from this horrid place. Then why try to make a difference? Why try to change the injustices in this world? The reason we should try to make a difference is our Resurrection and The New Creation. Because the things we do in this world for the Kingdom will be carried to The New Creation. The Gospels teach about the Kingdom already braking into this world with Jesus’ Resurrection. So we now work for the Kingdom.

This kind of teaching is not an opiate. This kind of teaching tells us to get out and change the world. Bring more of the Kingdom in to this dark world. Resurrection and New Creation is not a teaching Dictators or anyone who wants to control you, wants out there. That’s the point. That’s our job.

Now, I just need to figure out what that means on a personal level for me.

Near Death

While opening the store this morning I come across a newspaper clipping sitting on one the counters. I see a picture and recognize the face as a customer. He has been in a few times and the last time I saw him he just bought two skateboards for his kids and one for himself.

The clipping is an Obituary. Within hours of buying the skateboards, he died. He went out with his kids on the new boards they purchased that night, hit a rock while going fast and fell head first onto the pavement. He went into a comma then died a few hours later.

It's really odd. I was one of the last people he talked too and we just talked about Skateboards.

If there is anyone reading this. Please pray for the family. God knows their names and needs.

Creative differences

Recently I have had an urge to be creative in some way. I play guitar so that seems like an obvious choice but I haven’t seriously played in over a year and my skill level has decreased significantly. So everything ends up sounding the same. This has led me to the idea to start playing and pushing myself so I can build up my chops again. And that opens up a whole new host of problems. Mainly, time. I work, work and work some more plus Church and then Victoria time. This leaves me with little to no guitar time. By the time I have a few hours to myself I am too pooped to want to pick up the axe and give it a serious go.

One of my other options is to write. Writing doesn’t take to much time and its something I can sprinkle in throughout the day. Sometimes at work I have dead space with nothing to really do. I can’t very well bring my guitar up here so writing seems like a better option. The only problem I see with writing and those who read this blog (if anyone) would know. I do not do it all to well. I have a few ideas for stories.

One last thing I know I can do is draw. Yes, another of my many talents is drawing. I used to draw a lot and wasn’t too shabby. However like any muscle that isn’t used it has atrophied. I recently tried to draw a face and it came out looking like some horrible anime gone wrong. I know I can correct this if I spend time doing it again and study technique. Here we are back at the lack of time barrier.

Oh woe is me. Yeah right. I know I have a few things at my disposal do scratch this creative itch I am feeling. Part of writing this very entry is helping me decide how I should go about it. Believe me, I am reading what I am writing and seeing how foolish some of it sounds.

All in all its pretty good.

Things are somewhat quite on the Micah front. Well, at least now they are. Last week I fell ill with a horrible stomach virus or bug or something. It really ate me up for a day. I woke up Tuesday with a very sour feeling and about 15 minutes later I let it all out. It only went downhill from there. The night before I was reading about the Resurrection and all about the new bodies. How they will be perfect. No illness no decay. Then the next morning I get sick. Point made! There are no cowinkydinks.

We have a new guy at the store. His name is Jeff. Really nice guy and gets what we do pretty easy. He worked at GameStop for a while so he understands how a game store works for the most part. Although we do things different then GameStop. He’s been on for about two weeks and should be opening by himself this Thursday. The Boss Man wanted him fast tracked so we can have a steady schedule. He is still a bit sketchy on a few things but he knows enough now that he can handle himself.

On the Church end of things we have no Sunday Class for three weeks. That stinks. Plus no Wednesday night class for the next two weeks. But we are doing something a bit different in April anyways. We will be talking about Life after life after death. I’m really looking forward to it. A lot of the discussion will be done out of the book that I am reading. This Easter is taking on more meaning for me than any other. What with reading this book and all. I am thinking about what the Resurrection really means. Im not the first one to say and it and not the last but we have the holiday celebrations all backwards. Christmas is nice but Easter needs to be the day we do up. That is what everything Christians believe hinges on. If not for the Resurrection the rest can just blow away.

Surprised By Hope

A fews days back I picked up N.T. Wright's newest book "Surprised By Hope." I am about half way through and loving every minute of it. I have too stop every few pages and let what I read sink in. I know this one is going to be a book I'll read a few times.

Wright, looks at Resurrection and what it means and what it should mean to Christians. Also, how does this relate to our current situations. With the Resurrection we also have the New Creation. One of the big things it tackles is the misconception of Heaven and what happens when we die.

Good stuff. So much good stuff its hard for me to really pinpoint one thing I want to write about here. So for now I won't try.

Food

This morning I went up to the church and helped unload some food from a big truck. I also took some pictures.

Food

This food is for the Angel Food program at the church. Families can come out and get food for 1/3 the price it cost at stores.
